Regulators fine Universal Property, state’s largest private insurer, $1.3M

Florida regulators hit Universal Property & Casualty Insurance Co., the largest private homeowners insurance company in the state, with a $1.26 million fine for its market conduct. This is the second regulatory action against the company since 2009. It has $765 million in written annual premium and over 542,000 policyholders. The order from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation said the Fort Lauderdale-based insurer, a subsidiary of Universal Insurance Holdings (NASDAQ: UVE) stated that from 2009 through May 2013 had numerous violations. This month I have been to Court in Broward, Palm Beach, Osceola and Orange County! I managed to get the State Attorney’s Office to dismiss a D.U.I. charge one of my clients was facing. Also, I settled a case which I have been litigating for over a year just prior to the case being set for trial in Broward County, Florida. Finally, I successfully resolved an outstanding FIGA claim that involved major remediation work that was performed at a commercial property in Broward County.
